Refugee Support Express – 28 June 2018

WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

KEEPING UP WITH KATSIKAS

Our free shops are very popular, and this week, our boutique was dedicated towards children’s clothing. With mum’s help, the children were allowed to pick their own clothing, and our volunteers made sure that it was a fun and dignified experience for all, just like shopping in a real clothes shop!

We continue to invest in the local Greek community by purchasing fruit and vegetables from local suppliers-and in the warmer weather, we get through a lot of fruit and veg! Our volunteers are doing a fantastic job this summer, and we’re looking forward to welcoming new volunteers to the Katsikas Krew over the upcoming months.

If you’d like to volunteer in a refugee camp and help refugees in Greece any time from early September, please get in touch with us at info@refugeesupporteu.com today to find out more, and read some of our volunteer stories here.

Standing with refugees podcast

Food is our common ground, a universal experience.

For this week’s podcast, we spoke Melina Macall, founder of the United Tastes of America programme.

The programme encourages Syrians in the USA to share their culture and traditions, and by encouraging them to share these skills through the one thing that we universally love: food.

The programme is structured around communal meals, and originated from a Christmas meal that Melina and her friend Kate organised for Jewish and Muslim residents. United Tastes of America aims to bring people together over food, and their motto says it all: Breaking Bread, Building Bridges.

This is a lovely podcast about how food has the power to build friendships and futures together.

FUN-DRAISING!

To celebrate their anniversary on 22 June, Martin Searle Solicitors threw a party to help refugees in Greece; and it was lovely to see some members of Refugee Support joining in with the celebrations!

The prosecco was flowing and the beers were cool as guests relaxed in the garden, and browsed through photos of the refugee camps we aided back in 2016. Paul also spoke to guests about the rising political tensions that continue to affect refugees internationally.

After an introduction from Stephen Silverwood and his friends from Refugee Radio, Syrian musicians Jamal and Alaa enchanted the crowd with their traditional Syrian and Arabic folk music.

It was a lovely night, and thanks to everyone who got involved and helped to raise awareness for the plight of refugees.

Whether you’re a volunteer, a business, or just somebody who just wants to help refugees in Greece and enjoy a good party, there’s lots of things you can do to raise money and awareness for those who need it. If you’d like to throw a fundraiser, please get in touch with us to see how we can help.
