Dignity in Doliana

Hey, we’re off to the USA!

KEEPING INFORMED – WHAT WE’RE READING

Following the horrific chemical attacks in Syria last weekend, we’ve been watching closely as the world responds to the news.

Here’s an article on what happened in Syria. WARNING: This story contains graphic images of dead and injured children.

There’s a lot of outrage in the media at the moment but we saw similar  outrage following similar attacks in 2013 and 2017. This indiscriminate slaughter of innocent civilians has to stop.

We encourage you to make clear that you oppose this crime against humanity and demand an end to the violence in Syria. In the UK you can contact your MP. We cannot look away from this. We must stand with refugees now more than ever.

What we’re listening to

This week, we’ve been listening to how Athens has been finding homes for thousands of refugees who have trapped in the city.

‘In a rundown neighbourhood in Athens there is a hotel with 4,000 people on its waiting list for rooms. But the roof leaks and the lifts are permanently out of action.’

Greece’s Haven Hotel – BBC Radio 4

Naturally, we’ve also been listening to the latest installment of the ‘standing with refugees’ podcast.

STANDING WITH REFUGEES PODCAST

For this week’s podcast, Paul spoke to Ingrid Van Loo, a good friend to Refugee Support Europe and, more pressingly, to refugees.

We met Ingrid in the Calais jungle in 2015, and she quickly became one of our first supporters when our charity was founded in 2016. After Ingrid left the jungle, she went on to do one of the most incredible things that one could do – she opened the doors of her home to allow refugees moving to the UK to seek sanctuary, and find their feet. Ingrid is now hosting 4 refugees in her home.

In this podcast, Paul and Ingrid not only discuss the numerous difficulties that a refugee faces (on top of everything) when they arrive in the UK – such as accessing local services and integrating – but also the determination that many refugees, in the face of prejudiced stigmas, have to build a life and work hard.

This is a moving story from someone, like many of our friends, volunteers and donors, who decided that it was time to stand with refugees. And, as Ingrid and many others have said: ‘It has been the best years of my life.”

We thoroughly recommend this podcast for anyone who is interested in hosting refugees at home, as it contains important advice about where to start and why it’s such a humbling, human experience.

DIGNITY IN DOLIANA

We have a new weekly shopping system at Doliana camp.

Each week, we will now take each family’s order on a tablet. We bag their order up at Katsikas camp, and then deliver to their doorstep in Doliana the following week.

The camp is small and isolated, so we visit the camp weekly in order to run our moving, free shop.

Doliana consists of 105 refugees living in an abandoned music school. The camp is 5km from the nearest shops and 40km from the nearest town. We hope to provide more aid with dignity to the camp by making the outside world more accessible to the camp in the future.

However, we need your help today to  make this plan a reality. Would you like to volunteer at a refugee camp, or are looking for good ways to raise money for charity? We have lots of ideas, so please get in touch today.

Hey, we’re off to the USA!

‘Refugee Support Europe is a story of human solidarity with resilient and resourceful people.’

To mark our second anniversary, we’re travelling to the USA to share our story and help spread our message of aid with dignity to the far corners of the world.

We’re unleashing the big guns for this occasion – John and Paul – and are looking for opportunities to give some talks to people who are interested in helping refugees around Europe.

Can you help organise a talk or introduce us to a group?
