Community as a Superpower: Celebrating World Refugee Day in Bournemouth

On 20 June, we celebrated Refugee Week with a joyful street party outside our Bournemouth Dignity Centre, embodying this year’s theme of ‘community as a superpower.’

Our amazing volunteers helped to run creative activities, decorate the centre and welcome guests. We loved seeing people step into our selfie frame, grab a plate of food and strike up conversations with members, neighbours and friends. It was also wonderful to see a local Police Community Support Officer get involved. Our Coordinator, Zoe, summed up the spirit of the day perfectly:

“I’ve always believed in the power of food and music to bring people together. For those who have had to leave behind beloved countries and families, these tastes, textures and sounds help to restore identity and reconnect with joyful memories of home.”

There was lots of laughter and more than a few dance moves, and through it all a strong sense that what we’ve built together in Bournemouth really matters. Community IS a superpower — and our community is the BEST.

Thank you to everyone who came, helped, shared a dish, offered a smile or danced with us in the street. And thank you to those who supported our donation drive and signed up to stay in touch: we’re so glad to have you with us.
