Refugee Support Express – 31 May 2018

WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

Hey, we’re off to the USA!

We are kicking off our US tour on Saturday exhibiting at the 1 Journey Festival in Washington DC where we will be among friends.  Through art, food, fashion, music and dance, the festival is sending the message that refugees are vital to our society. We know that but this can never be stated enough.

After that we will be in New York, Bridgeport, Minneapolis, Montclair and Atlanta.  See the full list here and if you are in the area please come and see us. We would love to say hello.

We still have some space so f you think you can help with another date between 3-24 June, please contact Paul on paul@refugeesupporteu.com

Brilliant fundraising!

The 20 people who retraced the refugee route from Idomeni to Skopje (by walking a lot of it but with a little help from a coach!) raised a massive £50,000 to help fund our work in Greece.

These funds are critical to help us continue our essential work on the 3 camps where we work. It also enables us to add in some extras like the free distribution of dates to support the breaking of the fast during Ramadan. We will also be funding Eid celebrations later this month.

The fundraising was an important element but those of us taking part really valued spending a week together with like-minded people. Walkers Paul and Christa talked about that in this week’s podcast, the poignancy of that walk and the challenges of volunteering.

Have you subscribed to our podcast? We have simple instructions on how to do that. We publish regular conversations with some of the amazing people we meet in our day to day work who are Standing with Refugees.

Staying Informed – With the channel you prefer

In addition to this weekly post on the website, we also email out a short newsletter once a month. It is always informative, friendly and designed to feed back what we have been doing to all our supporters.

You can see this month’s newsletter here. We will only email once a month, we never use it to beg for money and we will never pass your emails on to another organisation!

But you may also see us in the news soon! Professional PR agency Gong Communications has chosen us as their pro bono PR agency and they have big plans for getting us noticed in the wider world.

It takes 2 minutes to sign up to our monthly newsletter. Or you can add us on our very active facebook page, Instagram or Twitter.  Not only do we have great volunteers on the camp, these channels are brilliantly run by volunteers Chloe, Susi, Andrew and Frederica.

DRINK, DANCE AND MAKE A DIFFERENCE!

To celebrate their anniversary on 22 June, our partners Martin Searle Solicitors are throwing a party in Brighton to raise money for refugees – and it sounds fabulous!

Tickets are £12 and include lots of musical entertainment, food and a free glass of cava or prosecco.

They’ll be displaying a collection of Refugee Support photography on the night, and Paul and Chloe, Martin Searle’s volunteer, will be around all night to talk about all things Refugee Support. Stephen Silverwood from Refugee Radio will also be compering the evening.

Whether you’re a volunteer, a person of business, or just somebody who just wants to help refugees and enjoy a good party, join them to celebrate and make a difference. The invitation is open to everyone!
