We are proud to be among more than 150 civil society organisations to sign a joint statement calling for a more equitable and coordinated approach to migration and asylum in Europe.
Published as the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum comes into effect, the statement warns that the Pact risks leading to greater detention, containment and exclusion, without creating the safe routes or humane reception systems that are urgently needed.
It calls on European governments and institutions to take full account of our coalition’s Manifesto to Stop the Inhumanity at Europe’s Borders, which sets out five key demands: saving lives, humanising reception arrangements, ending containment, establishing safe routes and enabling justice and redress.
At Refugee Support Europe, we believe that people forced to leave their homes should be able to move in safety and be treated with dignity and respect. Europe’s response to migration must be guided by human rights and shared responsibility, offering practical alternatives to policies that place people at risk.
As signatories, we join organisations across Europe and beyond in urging governments and institutions to listen to civil society and ensure that the implementation of the Pact does not come at the expense of people’s safety or fundamental rights.
