RS Express – Keeping Warm On A Refugee Camp

WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

Keeping warm in Katsikas

People are often surprised to learn that it gets very cold in Greece in the winter – and this year has been no exception.

Katsikas camp has seen snow several times, and in a refugee camp where residents are potentially dealing with mental health issues or physical ailments, it’s important to make sure that everyone can keep warm.

As well as hot meals that residents can cook for themselves with food from our free shops, we provide warm winter clothing to everyone on camp.

That’s a lot of coats to hand out, but our smiley volunteers never fail to aid with dignity. Even when the weather has been harsh, we are proud to say that our free shop has never opened late.

Mother love

Last week, we shared a touching note that we found with some baby clothes that had been donated from a mother to a mother.

‘We are praying for you and we hope these clothes make your baby a bit warmer, safer and happier. With love from a fellow mother in England xx’

One person commented that they often found loving notes like this when helping to pack containers of clothes sent to Syria.

It’s examples like these when we see love at its most human.

Volunteer at a refugee camp in 2019

Would you like to volunteer at a refugee camp this year? We are looking for some hardworking, dedicated people to join us from mid-February.

If volunteering is something that you’ve always wanted to do but always put off, or something that you have pledged to do this year, why don’t you join the Refugee Support family?

Find out more about what we do and our core values here, and check out some of the first-hand accounts of previous volunteers’ experiences on our website.

If you’re interested in volunteering in February, or you would like to volunteer at a refugee camp in Greece later on in the year, please get in contact today.

Long hair is helpful but not essential. We welcome volunteers with all hairstyles, and were shortlisted for the Diverse Charity of the Year award last year!

Welcoming Eve Lineres to our board of trustees

We are delighted that Eve Linieres has joined our brilliant team of trustees. Eve has volunteered twice in Greece, has a huge wealth of business experience, and more importantly, has ‘bags of smiley energy’ that is at the foundation of everything we do.

You can find out more about our trustees here.
