Refugee Support Express – 9 August 2018

WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

Down in Doliana

Despite focusing much of our dedication this year towards offering aid to refugees at Katsikas camp, we continue to make regular trips and distributions at a number of small, isolated refugee camps in Greece.

Every Sunday, our volunteers assist Doliana camp by preparing, packing and delivering food orders made the week previously to the doors of residents at the camp. Once each delivery has been made, volunteers then take each family’s orders for the next week, which they then purchase, prepare, and deliver again the following Sunday.

This method not only allows residents to receive frequent, nutritious food parcels without having to travel miles to the nearest local services, but allows people the freedom to choose what they want.

Thanks to our brilliant volunteers and donor, Help Refugees, we are able to deliver aid with dignity to Doliana – a camp with little access to the outside world – every week. Awesome!

We’re looking for volunteers to help aid refugees by joining us at Katsikas camp in Greece from mid-September. Please get in touch today, and check out our volunteer stories for a taste of what it’s to volunteer with Refugee Support.

Standing with Refugees podcast

For our latest Standing with Refugees podcast, Paul spoke to one of our trustees, Rana, about supporting our newly launched Business fund for refugees at Katsikas.

This week, we shared details of the first 12 businesses to be receiving the business fund this August, and there’s some promising ideas that we’re excited to help nourish.

Paul and Rana have spent the past weekend working at Katsikas camp on the business fund, and Rana will be overseeing the project as it develops, and the businesses take their first steps.

In this podcast, Paul and Rana discuss some of the fantastic businesses that have already taken flight, and the industrious people behind them.

Our business fund is the next step in our model to bring dignity and normality to people stuck in refugee camps, and we’re looking forward to the future of the project.

If you’d like to help support refugees by contributing towards this new scheme, you can aid by making a donation, or by getting in touch if you have business coaching skills.

Three years of dignity

In April, Refugee Support celebrated its second birthday. But for co-founders Paul and John, the quest to offer aid with dignity to refugees began three years ago in Calais.

In a recent talk, Paul described how the way we help refugees has changed over the years, and how the intention has always been the same: to deliver aid in the most dignified way possible.

You can listen to the talk below:

Thank you for reading, and we’ll see you next time.
