Refugee Support Express – 23 August 2018

WELCOME TO THE REFUGEE SUPPORT EXPRESS

THIS WEEK:

World humanitarian day

There are over 68 million refugees worldwide, and every minute of every day, 22 people become refugees.

Last Sunday marked World Humanitarian Day, and this week, we reflected on those crossing the Mediterranean to flee to safety, and those that are trying to help. More than 1,500 refugees have died trying to cross the Mediterranean Sea to Europe in the first seven months of this year, with over half of them in June and July. Around 60,000 refugees have crossed the Mediterranean since January. In recent months, Italy and Malta have closed their ports to NGO rescue ships, leaving them stranded at sea with desperate refugees on board.

We have worked with many humanitarians over the last two years in Greece and Bangladesh. We remain astounded by just how many people are willing to give their time, money and energy to help those who need it, and we’d like to thank every single one of you.

VOLUNTEERING AT A REFUGEE CAMP IN GREECE

We’re looking for volunteers to join our wonderful Refugee Support family from October and over the winter months, and to help us continue to offer aid with dignity to refugees in Greece. Renovations began this month at Katsikas camp to double its capacity from 450 to 950 residents. We need your help refugees with as much dignity and normality as possible as they aim to move new residents in in October.

For a taste of what volunteering at a refugee camp with Refugee Support is like, please check out our volunteer stories. Although it’s hard (and sometimes mundane) work, our volunteers share a lot of fun, and days off in Greece can be very relaxing. At LM Village there are some amazing beaches, and Ioannina has some great swimming pools, and there’s great restaurants everywhere,

Half the camp population is kids, so in the afternoons, our volunteers focus on children’s activities. There’s also lots of opportunities to do some hands-on work in Katsikas. For example, this week, volunteers were (with help from the Katsikas Kids) chiseling flowerbeds out of the rocky soil to give residents a space to grow something beautiful and colourful.

We have a wonderful family of volunteers who do incredible things to help refugees. If you or someone you know would like to aid refugees in Greece by volunteering at a refugee camp, please get in touch with us today.

Life in LM Village

This week, we shared a blog about the stats at LM village, where a summer baby boom seems is in full swing. There are now just as many 0-3 year olds as there are children aged 4 to 15, and one in three women in the camp are pregnant!

Life in LM Village is literally thriving, but even though residents are safe and secure, life is still not easy. Bringing a child into the world is tough at the best of times, and raising a child in the purgatory of a refugee camp is a challenge that we can only imagine.

We will continue with the aid of our donors and volunteers to do what we can to make this time as safe and easy for new families as possible.
